Joseph Meigs was born in Atlanta, Georgia, and raised in Berkeley, California, and Jacksonville, Florida. He earned a B.A (1964) in English with minors in chemistry and biology while attending the University of Florida on a basketball scholarship. He received his PhD in English there in 1970 and went on to teach literature (Shakespeare, World Literature, and Literary Criticism) and film studies at Western Carolina University until retiring in 2005. He has been a photographer and painter for approximately thirty-five years, currently serving as one of the resident artists for the Jackson County (North Carolina) Arts Association. His
favorite subjects are old barns, cabins, and landscapes. The Jackson County Arts Council dedicates an October exhibition of his paintings and photography at Gallery One to the North Carolina Arts Council's 50th Anniversary.
