Duke Performances: Monk@100

  • Durham Fruit and Produce Company 305 South Dillard Street Durham, NC, 27701 United States (map)

Duke Performances will commemorate the centenary of jazz icon and North Carolina native Thelonious Monk through “MONK@100,” a ten-day event at the Durham Fruit & Produce Company, a 15,000-square-foot warehouse space for the arts in downtown Durham, from Tuesday, October 17 through Thursday, October 26.

In addition to its extensive musical offerings, this celebration of Monk’s music — the most visible of its kind in the world — will bring to Duke and Durham a variety of free public events, including a public conversation, jam sessions, and vinyl listening stations spanning Monk’s entire catalogue.

On the afternoon of Friday, October 20, journalist, author, and former New York Times music critic Ben Ratliff will moderate a public conversation with participating artists Ethan Iverson, Kris Davis, and Jason Moran, discussing the legacies of both Monk and the late pianist Geri Allen. On Wednesday, October 18 and Saturday, October 21, following the conclusion of the 9 PM sets both evenings (at 10:30 PM), Iverson will lead a pair of free public jam sessions at Durham Fruit & Produce, providing student and community musicians the chance to engage with contemporary masters around Monk’s music. The public is also invited throughout the festival to visit listening stations at the venue to listen to all of Monk’s records on vinyl.
